UCS presents multiple Human Service Awards each year, which pay tribute to individuals and organizations making a difference in the Johnson County community.
The 2025 Excellence in Community Service Award was presented to the El Centro Promotoras Program. The Promotoras de Salud (Health Promoters) are trained volunteers providing outreach, education, and information on healthy lifestyles for people who speak Spanish as their primary language. These Latina community leaders serve as trusted bridges between families and essential health, education, housing and advocacy services—helping reduce barriers such as language, limited information and access to resources.
They have significantly increased Latino participation in local programs and supports, including voter registration, healthy eating classes, Know Your Rights education, mobile mammogram screenings, cancer survivor and mental health support groups, food distribution, summer reading programs, computer classes and community health fairs across Johnson County.
Their passion, commitment, and empathy strengthen community well-being and uphold every Latino person’s right to live a dignified, healthy and equitable life.
